While they are physically prosperous, he reminds them they are spiritually impoverished.

This week we look at his statements to the church of Sardis. This was a church known for its energy and exuberance. It had a reputation for being alive, but Jesus instead labels it as dead/asleep.

They were abounding in love, but had empowered false teachers in their communities.

Here we see that even though there was faithfulness amidst persecution, they had given positions of influence to false teachers who rationalized assimilation with the Roman government.

While martyrdom is not something a 21st century American regularly would face, can we learn from their faith as it pertains to suffering and slander in our lives?
